Casting is the process of auditioning performers for any live or taped production. Entertainers can be actors, singers, dancers and models. A series of auditions typically takes place in pre-production by a casting panel usually consisting of the producer, the director, and the choreographer. In the preliminary stages, prepared monologues or songs are performed by the candidate. If the candidate advances, group auditions are performed of the proposed show in which individual talent and combined chemistry are evaluated.
Major productions may require a specialized staff to oversee the audition process. A casting director, and casting assistant or casting associate may handle the daily recruitment of performers for productions that require hundreds or possibly thousands of extras in addition to the major roles. Casting directors also often act as a liaison between the performers and the director after the cast has been set. Casting calls vary according to the type of production. Open or public casting calls are used for some productions, while major studio productions may specify professional actors for prestigious roles. Initial auditions for extras may take place in local areas often at the site of proposed shooting. However, the most noteworthy roles will go to celebrity or known actors for their commercial appeal and auditions take a more directly personal approach with the director.
Note that auditioning in the entertainment industry is often criticized for its unappealing process. Nepotism, stereotyping and sexism are all complaints that have been proclaimed against the entertainment industry. Because the rewards can be tremendous, people often find themselves in perhaps compromised situations. The Internet has help change some of the problems with the casting couch system by providing greater access to new comers and professionals.
